The location of Rome in the geographic center of New York and positioning at an important early land bridge between main waterways has contributed greatly to its success. In the early days of Rome, the city was viewed as an important transportation point for people and goods moving west. The city was originally a fort built to protect the great Carrying Place and its settlers in 1758. The fort became known as “the fort that never surrendered” and effectively swayed the course of the American Revolution. After the construction of the Erie Canal, Rome continued to play a significant role in history. In 1870, Rome was incorporated as a city. Today, the city continues to have great success.
